Ministry of Women’s Affairs and UN Women Renew Commitment to Gender Equality in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, April 1, 2024 – In a meeting this week between the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and UN Women has underscored a renewed dedication to advancing gender equality in Cambodia. Minister Ing Kantha Phavi and Mrs. Sarah Knibbs, Deputy Regional Director for UN Women in Asia and the Pacific, led the discussions.

The Minister expressed her appreciation for UN Women's significant contributions to Cambodia, particularly highlighting the successful collaborations aimed at protecting women and children from violence and advancing legal reforms. These efforts are in line with the National Action Plan for Violence Prevention (2024–2030).

A focal point of their discussions was the preparation of a national report on Cambodia's adherence to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). Additionally, they deliberated on an action plan focusing on Women in Peace and Security, underscoring the integral role of women in fostering peace and security within the region.

The meeting also served as a platform to exchange insights and strategies on addressing gender-related challenges, especially those exacerbated by climate change. The dialogue between the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and UN Women marks a significant step forward in the collective effort to ensure gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in Cambodia.
